A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer lives are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving. To inquire after the meaning or object of one’s own existence or that of all creatures has always seemed to me absurd from an objective point of view. And yet everybody has certain ideals which determine the direction of his endeavors and his judgments. In this sense I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves---this ethical basis I call the ideal of a pigsty. The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to have life cheerfully, have been kindness, beauty, and truth. Without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed to me empty. The trite objects of human efforts — possessions, outward success, luxury -– have always seemed to me contemptible.

我总觉得探究一个人或一切生物生存的意义或目的，从客观的角度看，是愚蠢可笑的。可是，每一个人都有一定的理想，这些理想决定了他努力的方向和判断的倾向。从这个意义上讲，我从不把安逸和享乐看作是生活目的的本身——我把这种道德基础叫做“猪栏式”理想。照亮我的道路，并且不断地给我新的勇气，让我能够乐观地看待生活的理想是真、善、美。要是没有志同道合者之间的亲密感情，要不是全神贯注于客观世界——那个在艺术和科学工作领域永远难以企及的目标，那么在我看来，生活就会是空虚的。我总觉得，人们所努力追求的庸俗的目标——财产、徒有其表的成功、奢侈的生活——都是可鄙的。
