句型:
“be always doing…”
这个句型并非现在进行时,它表达了说话人的某种感情色彩。
e.g. He is always making the same mistakes.(厌恶)
    He is always kind to us.(赞叹)
变化:
“someone always does something…”
e.g. He always looks down upon the poor.(厌恶)
    He always finishes his homework on time.(赞叹)
复习:
1).It is said that he is always making the same mistakes.
2).Whenever he goes,he always leaves behind him a trail of broken hearts.
3).It is disturbing to think that the boy always climbs those high mountains all by himself.

2. Looking at his watch,he saw that it was one o’clock,but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.
他一看表,才一点钟,可是那钟一连敲了13下才停.
句型:
“…before…”
注意,这里的before不是“在…之前”的意思,而是“…才”的意思.
e.g.Nearly a week passed before she could explain what had happened to her.
直到一周过去了,她才得以解释究竟发生了什么事.
Notes:
原文的句子实际上是一个省略句,完整的句子应该是:when he looked at his watch,he saw…为了使文章看上去更紧凑简洁,作者使用了现在分词代替一个分句.
需要注意的是,这里不可以用过去分词,原因是使用过去分词还是现在分词,关键在于句子的主语.ed-分词表示的是一种被动关系,ing-分词则表示主动关系.
在本句中,因为“看表”是vicar本人发出的动作,所以当用现在分词.下面举一例过去分词的例子:
Repaired by the mechanic, the car is working now.
另外,紧接着的课文“Armed with a torch,the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.”中,过去分词并不表示被动关系,只要稍微调整句子顺序就可以看出来了:The vicar was armed with a torch and went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.这里的be armed表示的是此时主语的状态.
复习:
Enough evidence accumulated before the experts could make sure that the animal was a puma.

3. In the torchlight,he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins,our local grocer.
借着电筒光,他看见一个人,马上认出那是本地的杂货商----Bill Wilkins.
句型:
1).“in the torchlight…”
e.g.In the torchlight,one could easily see everything when it is dark.
变化:
表示借着光线,都可以用“in the …light”
in the sunlight
in the moonlight
in the candlelight

2).“recognize…as…”把…当作…;认出…是…
e.g.The minute I saw him,I recognized him as one of my classmates.
类似的句型有:
think of someone as/regard someone as/view someone as
当然,上述用法还可以用于物,例如:
The moment I saw it,I immediately recognized it as a piece of antique.
复习:
In the sunlight,the woman recognized the puma as a large cat.

4.Thirteen is not as good as one,but it’s better than nothing.
13下虽不如1下好,但总比没有好.
句型:
“as good as…”=almost,几乎
e.g. The summer‘s as good as over
    This carpet‘s as good as ruined.

5.这一课出现的几个常用口语句型也值得注意:
still…=but/nonetheless/nevertheless…表示转折, “但是”
That’s the trouble/proble.那正是问题所在.
There is nothing I can do about it.我无能为力.
